What Is Borrowed
The inner ring of the Rave Mandala is the astrological zodiac. Human Design uses it purely as a measuring instrument, a way to record exactly where each planet was. The same thirteen bodies appear on both charts: Sun, Earth, Moon, the North and South Nodes, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Each carries a broad archetypal role in Human Design that is recognisable from astrology, with the Sun as the core of the imprint and the outer planets as slow, generational themes.
What Is Different
Three things set the systems apart. First, Human Design does not interpret signs, houses or aspects. A planet's position is only read for which Gate and Line of the I Ching wheel it falls in. Second, Human Design always calculates twice, adding the Design moment about 88 days before birth, so it holds two full sets of planetary positions where astrology holds one. Third, the result is drawn onto the BodyGraph, a diagram of the body, rather than onto the wheel itself. The sky is the input; the body is the output.
The Earth and the Nodes
Two details that astrology rarely emphasises are central here. The Earth always sits exactly opposite the Sun on the wheel, and the Sun and Earth Gates from both calculations form the Incarnation Cross, which describes your life theme. The Nodes of the Moon, treated as a single axis, describe the environment and direction of the first and second halves of life, with the shift happening around the Uranus opposition in the early forties.
Why the Sky at All
Human Design's own explanation for why planetary positions matter is the neutrino stream: a constant flow of near-massless particles from the Sun and other stars that passes through the planets and then through us. Each planet is said to leave its own trace on the stream, and the position of a planet at birth decides which Gate that trace lands in. That mechanism is described on the Neutrinos page. The practical point: Human Design reads the sky the way a calculator reads a keypad, then does its real work on the diagram of the body.
