One of the Thirteen Planets

Uranus

Unusualness, Chaos and Order

Uranus is where you are strange. Not wrong, not broken, but noticeably different from the people around you, in a way that can look like chaos from the outside and turns out to have its own order. Wherever Uranus sits in your chart is the place you express your unusualness, and Human Design regards that unusualness as the mutative undercurrent that keeps humanity evolving.

Personality (black) and Design (red)

Uranus has a special place in the story Human Design tells about the human form. It is the planet whose cycle of about eighty-four years matches the modern lifespan, and the system credits its influence with the shift to a nine-centered being living a long life in three distinct stages: a subjective youth, an objective middle and a transcendent later age. The Uranus Opposition, around forty, is the hinge between the first two, and the point at which the Nodes change over.

On the Personality Side

Your Personality Uranus is the difference you know about, the way you consciously refuse to conform, the disruption you cause on purpose or find you cannot help. The gate names the arena. It is often the quality people call eccentric in you, and often the one they most admire once they stop being unsettled by it.

On the Design Side

Your Design Uranus is what your body expresses that others find odd or compelling without your being aware of it. It is the unconscious originality in how you move through the world, the pattern that does not fit and does not try to. You may only discover it when someone points out that nobody else does that.

A Generational Planet

Uranus moves slowly, spending about seven years in each sign of the wheel, so whole cohorts of people born within a few years of each other share the same Uranus gate. Human Design calls the outer planets transpersonal for this reason. Your Uranus is partly about you and partly about the generation you belong to, and the unusualness you carry is one you share with your peers.

Reading It In Your Chart

Find the Uranus glyph on each side and note the gate. Read it as the subject in which you are designed to be different, and resist the urge to correct it. The not-self experience of Uranus is trying to be normal in exactly the area where you never will be. The correct experience is letting the strangeness stand, because that is where your contribution to what comes next actually lives. Human Design groups Uranus with Neptune and Pluto as the three great themes for learning over a lifetime.
