Every chart has two Suns. The Personality Sun, printed in black, was calculated at the moment of your birth. The Design Sun, printed in red, was calculated about three months earlier, when your body was being finished. Together with their two Earths they form your Incarnation Cross, which is why the cross is the closest thing Human Design has to a statement of purpose.
On the Personality Side
Your Personality Sun is how you shine. It is the part of your character you recognise as yourself, the quality you would name if someone asked what you are about. The line of this gate is also the first number in your Profile, so it sets the role you consciously play in the world. Read the gate and its line and you are reading the theme you are here to express on purpose.
On the Design Side
Your Design Sun is the light other people see radiating from you before you have said a word. You did not choose it and you may not recognise it, because it belongs to the body rather than the mind. It carries the genetic inheritance that came down your father's line. The line of this gate is the second number in your Profile, the unconscious half of your role.
Reading It In Your Chart
Start any reading of the planets with the two Suns. Find the gate number next to the Sun glyph on each side of the chart, look up the gate, and read its description as the theme of your life rather than as one trait among many. The Earth gates directly beneath them will always sit exactly opposite in the wheel, which is the balance that lets the Sun's energy be lived in a body. Where the Sun is your purpose, the Earth is your footing.
Why It Matters More Than the Rest
Astrology built a whole tradition around the Sun sign, and Human Design agrees about the weight while disagreeing about the map. Here the Sun is not a sign but a gate and a line, one of 384 possible positions, and it is read twice. That doubling is what lets a chart describe both who you think you are and who you actually are, and how the two meet.
