One of the Thirteen Planets

Saturn

Discipline, the Judge

Saturn is the judge. It is the place in your chart where you deal with the consequences of your own actions, an ancient yin force that keeps the accounts and settles them without sentiment. Human Design does not soften this. Saturn is a taskmaster who expects and does not praise, and where it sits is where you will pay for any incorrectness in your life.

The consolation is that Saturn is also a signpost, and a reliable one. If Saturn is leaving you alone, you are living correctly. If it is making itself felt, you have broken one of your own rules, values or laws, and the discomfort is information. Over a lifetime, Saturn is the planet that lets you see your own progress, because the lessons it teaches do not have to be repeated once they are learned.

On the Personality Side

Your Personality Saturn is the consequence you know about. It is the area of life where you have consciously learned that cutting corners costs you, where discipline had to be built the hard way, and where you have the most mature sense of accountability. The gate names the arena. Most people can point to it as the place they grew up.

On the Design Side

Your Design Saturn is where the body pays for incorrectness you may not even have noticed. It shows in the physical and practical consequences that arrive without an obvious cause, the pattern of setbacks that seems unfair until you trace it back to a value or a law you broke without knowing. Others sometimes see this discipline in you as a kind of gravity.

Reading It In Your Chart

Find the Saturn glyph on each side and note the gate. Read the gate as the subject you are held accountable for rather than as a trait. Then look back across your Venus and Jupiter on the same side, and ask what value, made into what law, this Saturn is enforcing. The first Saturn return, at around twenty-nine, and the second, at around fifty-eight, are the points in a life when this whole chain is tested, and people who know their Saturn gate tend to meet those years with far less confusion.

The Great Teacher

Saturn rarely offers a shortcut, and that is its gift. The area of life it governs is frequently the one in which people eventually become most masterful, precisely because they were never allowed to fake it.
