One of the Thirteen Planets

Mars

Immature Energy

Mars is raw energy that has not yet learned what it is for. Human Design calls it immature, and means it kindly: Mars is the youngest son, full of force and free of responsibility, slow to get moving and then almost impossible to stop. Once it builds momentum it can run straight over the most basic inhibitions, which is where the outbursts come from. It is also, over a lifetime, one of the great engines of personal transformation.

Personality (black) and Design (red)

The key word is time. Mars energy does not arrive wise; it becomes wise. Where Mars sits in your chart is where you will make your loudest early mistakes and, if you stay with it, where you will eventually develop a mature and precise sense of how energy ought to be used. The volatility of youth and the power of maturity are the same placement at different ages.

On the Personality Side

Your Personality Mars is the immature force you know about, the place where you consciously charge in, overcommit, push too hard or lose your temper. It is not a flaw to be ashamed of. It is the gate where life keeps handing you the same lesson until real skill emerges, and most people can name the subject immediately.

On the Design Side

Your Design Mars is what your body does when momentum takes over. It is the unconscious version of the same force: the reaction you have before you have decided to react, the drive that shows up in your behaviour before your mind has caught up. Others often see this Mars in you long before you do.

Reading It In Your Chart

Find the Mars glyph on each side and note the gate. Read the gate as the arena in which your energy is being trained rather than as a fixed quality. Then think about your age. If you are young, this is where you are likely to be clumsy and forceful. If you are older, ask whether the same gate has become a strength, because that is how Mars is designed to unfold. In either case the correction is not to suppress the energy but to let Strategy and Authority decide when it is released.

Mars Among the Others

Human Design groups Mars with Mercury and Jupiter as planets of outer authority. Mars is the part of that offering that comes from hard experience: the wisdom about energy that you can only hand to others once you have burned yourself learning it.
