Personality and Design

The black and red columns on a chart, why Human Design runs two calculations, and what the conscious and unconscious sides of you each contribute.

Every Human Design chart carries two columns of planetary data. The black column, headed Personality, is calculated for the moment of birth. The red column, headed Design, is calculated for a moment about 88 days earlier. Both are drawn onto the same BodyGraph, and together they make up your definition.

The Personality: What You Recognise as You

The black activations describe the part of you that you have conscious access to. These are the traits you would list if someone asked you to describe yourself, the things you notice in your own behaviour and can work with deliberately. Human Design calls this side the Personality, or the passenger. A useful image is standing on a hill above a road: you can see the traffic, where it is going, and you can wave as it passes.

The Design: What Your Body Does Without Asking

The red activations describe the unconscious side: the body's own nature, inherited through your family line, that runs whether or not you notice it. Human Design calls this the Design, or the vehicle. The matching image is looking at a tunnel: you cannot see inside, you only see what comes out. Things you say and do from your red activations can surprise you as much as anyone else. With age and honest reflection you come to know this side of yourself, but you never control it.

Why 88 Days

Human Design describes the body as forming first, with the Design imprint set when the neocortex has finished developing towards the end of the second trimester. About three months later, at birth, the Personality receives its own imprint. The precise figure used is 88 degrees of the Sun's movement along the wheel, which is why both dates are printed on your chart. Because both calculations are anchored to the actual birth, it makes no difference whether a baby was early, late or born by caesarean.

Two Sides, One Map

Ra Uru Hu described the pairing as a marriage that was arranged rather than chosen. The Personality believes it is running the life. In practice the body and its guidance system carry you along your path, and much of the friction people feel comes from the Personality trying to steer. Strategy and Authority exist so the conscious side can find the body's decision and follow it. When it does, the two sides stop fighting and the chart works as one design.

What to Look For on Your Chart

Gates and Channels in black are yours consciously; in red, unconsciously; striped in both, you carry them on both sides and they show up everywhere. Your Type, Strategy and Authority come from the combined definition, so neither column matters more than the other. The Profile, though, is read directly from the two columns: the Line of the Personality Sun gives the first number and the Line of the Design Sun gives the second.
