Strategy and Authority
Strategy is the rule that follows from your Type. Generators and Manifesting Generators wait to respond. Projectors wait for the invitation. Manifestors inform before they act. Reflectors wait a lunar cycle. Authority is the part of you that gives a reliable yes or no once Strategy has brought something to you: the Sacral's gut response, the Solar Plexus's wave over time, the Spleen's quiet instant knowing, and the rest. Between them they take decision making out of the head and put it somewhere that was built for it.
The Not-Self
Human Design's word for the version of you that runs on other people's expectations is the not-self. It is built up over years, mostly through the undefined Centers, where you take in and amplify what is around you and then mistake it for your own. The mind takes charge of this borrowed material and makes decisions with it. The system does not treat the not-self as a flaw to be ashamed of; it is simply what happens to a nine-centered body that has been steered by a mind. The point of the experiment is to see it clearly.
The Four Signposts
Each Type has a signature feeling when things are going right and a not-self theme when they are not. Manifestors feel peace or anger. Generators feel satisfaction or frustration. Projectors feel success or bitterness. Reflectors feel surprise or disappointment. The not-self themes are not moral failings; they are instruments. When frustration or bitterness shows up, it is information that a decision was made from the mind rather than from Authority, and it invites you to step back and look at how you entered the situation.
Deconditioning
The slow shedding of the not-self is called deconditioning. It is slow because it is physical. Human Design holds that changing how you make decisions changes how your cells operate, and that it takes about seven years for the body to be renewed, so the first full cycle of the experiment is measured in years rather than weeks. Nobody is asked to strip away conditioning by effort. You follow Strategy and Authority, and what is not yours falls away on its own timetable.
What the Mind Is For
None of this asks you to switch your mind off. The mind is the passenger, and a good passenger is awake and curious. Its job is to take in the view, weigh things up, notice patterns, and share what it sees with other people. It is only asked to stop doing one thing: deciding. Ra Uru Hu's own summary was that when you live by your Strategy and Authority there is nothing left to do, because the doing takes care of itself and you are no longer in its way.
Running the Experiment
Start small. Pick a Strategy and apply it to the next real decision, notice how the outcome feels against your signature and not-self theme, and keep going. A reading helps because someone who knows the mechanics can show you where your particular Authority lives and what your open Centers have been telling you is yours when it is not. That is the whole of what a Discovery Reading is for.
