What Is an Incarnation Cross

The four gates that give your life its overarching theme, how the Design side is calculated, why crosses split into three angles, why the same gates produce numbered variants, and how to find and live your own.

Every incarnation cross starts from the same four points on a chart: the Sun and Earth positions calculated for your birth, and the same two points calculated again for a moment roughly three months earlier. Those four gates give your life its overarching theme, the deepest and slowest layer of your purpose, the one that keeps returning across decades rather than showing up in any single decision. This page covers what the four gates are, why crosses split into three angles, why the same family of gates can produce several numbered crosses, how to find your own, and what it actually takes to live one.

The Four Gates That Make a Cross

A cross is built from the same four activations used to work out the rest of your definition. The Personality Sun and Personality Earth gates are calculated for the moment of your birth, and they carry the theme you have conscious access to and the ground it stands on. The Design Sun and Design Earth gates are calculated for the moment roughly three months earlier, when the Sun sat about 88 degrees back along the wheel, and they carry the same two roles on the unconscious, inherited side of you. The Personality and Design page in this Knowledge Base covers why the 88 degree gap exists and what black and red mean on a chart. What matters here is simpler: a cross always names itself after the Personality Sun gate, and the other three gates fill it out. Change any one of the four and you get a different cross.

The Three Angles

Every cross also carries an angle, and the angle comes from your Profile rather than from the four gates themselves. Right Angle crosses belong to the first seven Profiles, from 1/3 through 4/6, and are described as Personal Destiny: a self-contained life whose theme works itself out through your own experience rather than through anyone else's process. Left Angle crosses belong to the last four Profiles, from 5/1 through 6/3, and are described as Trans-Personal Destiny: a life whose theme depends on other people arriving in it, where a chance meeting can genuinely change your direction. Sitting between the two is the Juxtaposition angle, carried only by the 4/1 Profile and described as a Fixed Fate: neither fully personal nor fully trans-personal, a single track that pulls in whoever stays close to it long enough. Every cross name states its angle up front: the Right Angle Cross of Explanation, the Juxtaposition Cross of Bargains, the Left Angle Cross of Dedication.

Why Crosses Come in Numbered Variants

The same four gates can sit behind more than one named cross, because which of the four holds your Personality Sun changes which specific combination you are reading. Take the four gates 1, 2, 7 and 13. When the Personality Sun sits in gate 13, the result is the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx. When the Personality Sun sits in gate 2 instead, the same four gates rearrange into the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx 2. Gate 7 as the Personality Sun gives Sphinx 3, and gate 1 gives Sphinx 4. One family of four gates, four distinct crosses, depending on where consciousness lands among them. This is also where the 192 basic incarnation crosses come from: 64 possible Personality Sun gates, each read through one of three angles. A full incarnation cross reading works from a more specific set of 768 crosses, since the exact Personality and Design lines refine the picture beyond the gate level, but the 192 basic crosses are the layer most charts and reports name directly.

Finding Your Own Cross

Your incarnation cross is printed on your chart, but it comes from information you can also read yourself. Find your Personality Sun gate, the black Sun activation calculated for the exact moment of your birth, and that gate is the anchor your cross is named after. Your Profile then tells you which of the three angles applies. Put the two together and you have the name your chart already carries: an angle, a title, and four gate numbers in brackets.

Living a Cross

A cross describes a direction and a potential, not a guarantee and not a script handed to you at birth. Nobody simply reads the name of their cross and starts living it. Human Design treats a cross as something a life grows into slowly, over years of decisions made correctly, through Strategy and Authority rather than through the mind deciding what the theme ought to look like in advance. The four gates tell you the shape of the terrain. Walking it well is a separate, ongoing matter of letting your Type's Strategy and your own Authority make the actual decisions that carry you into it.

Questions People Ask

What are the four gates in an incarnation cross?

Every cross is built from the Personality Sun and Personality Earth gates, calculated for your exact moment of birth, plus the Design Sun and Design Earth gates, calculated for roughly three months earlier. Together these four gates give the cross its name and its theme.

How many incarnation crosses are there in Human Design?

There are 192 basic incarnation crosses, one for each of the 64 gates read through the three angles: Right Angle, Juxtaposition and Left Angle. A full reading works from a more specific set of 768 crosses once the exact Personality and Design lines are included.

What is the difference between a Right Angle, Juxtaposition and Left Angle cross?

The angle comes from your Profile. Right Angle crosses, Profiles 1/3 through 4/6, describe a self-contained Personal Destiny. Left Angle crosses, Profiles 5/1 through 6/3, describe a Trans-Personal Destiny that depends on other people. The Juxtaposition angle, carried only by the 4/1 Profile, is described as a Fixed Fate.

How do I find my incarnation cross?

Look up your Personality Sun gate, the black Sun activation from your exact birth time, and match it to your Profile's angle. Your chart or report will also print the full cross name directly.
