The Four Quarters

The four quarters of the Rave Mandala, their themes and gate groupings, and how the quarter your Personality Sun falls in colours your incarnation cross.

The 64 gates of the Rave Mandala are not only a wheel of individual themes. Ra Uru Hu divided the wheel into four Quarters of sixteen gates each, and every incarnation cross sits inside one of them. Knowing your quarter adds a layer above your cross: a broader current your specific theme is swimming in.

Where the Quarters Come From

The boundary points between the four quarters are set by the four gates of the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx: gates 1, 2, 7 and 13. Starting at gate 13 and moving round the wheel, the Quarter of Initiation begins, then the Quarter of Civilization begins at gate 2, the Quarter of Duality begins at gate 7, and the Quarter of Mutation begins at gate 1. Put the four themes into a single sentence and Human Design is describing a life cycle: we Initiate, then build Civilization, through Duality, until we Mutate our way toward the end of a life.

The Quarter of Initiation

Beginning at gate 13, this quarter's purpose is fulfilled through mind: thinking, educating, conceptualising and explaining what it means to be alive in a body. Almost all seven gates of the Solar Plexus center cluster here, along with the Channel of Initiation, which suits a quarter concerned with settling the mind into the directives of the body. Its sixteen gates are 13, 49, 30, 55, 37, 63, 22, 36, 25, 17, 21, 51, 42, 3, 27 and 24.

The Quarter of Civilization

Beginning at gate 2, this quarter's purpose is fulfilled through form: building the structures, communities and skills that let people develop and thrive once they are born. All eleven gates of the Throat center, the center of manifestation, fall inside it, which fits a quarter concerned with turning ideas into something built and shared. Its sixteen gates are 2, 23, 8, 20, 16, 35, 45, 12, 15, 52, 39, 53, 62, 56, 31 and 33.

The Quarter of Duality

Beginning at gate 7, this quarter's purpose is fulfilled through bonding: the pull toward another person that Human Design treats as the most intimately human of the four themes. All seven gates of the Spleen center sit here, alongside the Channel of Discovery and Mating, both tied to the instinctive, in-the-moment intelligence that bonding runs on. Its sixteen gates are 7, 4, 29, 59, 40, 64, 47, 6, 46, 18, 48, 57, 32, 50, 28 and 44.

The Quarter of Mutation

Beginning at gate 1, this quarter's purpose is fulfilled through transformation: bringing a life to its fullest potential and preparing what has been learned to be carried forward. Much of the Sacral center's generative energy and the Root center's pressure fall here, together with the Channel of Exploration, which fits a quarter about reaching toward what comes next. Its sixteen gates are 1, 43, 14, 34, 9, 5, 26, 11, 10, 58, 38, 54, 61, 60, 41 and 19.

How Your Quarter Colours Your Cross

Your incarnation cross is named from your Personality Sun gate, and that gate always sits inside one quarter. A cross built from gates in the Quarter of Duality carries a bonding undertone before you even read the individual gate keynotes, because the whole neighbourhood it is drawn from is about the pull toward another person. A cross in the Quarter of Civilization carries a building, form-making undertone for the same reason. Reading a cross without noticing its quarter still works, since the specific gates do the detailed work, but the quarter is the fastest way to feel the larger current your theme belongs to.

Questions People Ask

What are the four quarters in Human Design?

The four quarters are Initiation, Civilization, Duality and Mutation, each made up of sixteen gates. Their themes describe a life cycle: initiating through mind, building civilization through form, bonding through duality, and transforming through mutation.

How do I know which quarter my incarnation cross is in?

Look up the gate your Personality Sun sits in. Every gate belongs to one of the four quarters, and since your cross is named from that gate, your cross always sits inside a single quarter.

Which centers are associated with each quarter?

The Solar Plexus is concentrated in the Quarter of Initiation, the Throat in the Quarter of Civilization, the Spleen in the Quarter of Duality, and much of the Sacral and Root in the Quarter of Mutation.

Are all four quarters the same size?

Yes. Each quarter holds exactly sixteen of the 64 gates, so the Rave Mandala divides evenly into four equal quarters.
