From Paths to Channels
On the BodyGraph the Centers are the fixed points and the Channels are the pathways. There are 36 of them, each running between exactly two Centers, and each opening into a Center through a numbered Gate. The Tree's insight is that a point on its own does nothing; what matters is the connection. Human Design applies the same logic. A Center with no defined Channel into it stays undefined, however many single Gates it holds.
Why Both Ends Matter
A Channel is only defined when both of its Gates are activated. If you carry one Gate and not the other, the pathway is open at one end, waiting. This is where a lot of the chemistry between people comes from: someone who carries the Gate at the far end completes the Channel when the two of you are together, and both of you feel the connection as a spark that neither has alone. Human Design calls this an electromagnetic connection, and it is one of the main things a composite chart looks at.
Channels as a Circuit Board
Taken together the 36 Channels form the wiring of the BodyGraph. They bundle into circuits, and the circuits into three families, Individual, Collective and Tribal, each with its own way of relating to other people. That structure is described on the Circuitry page. The Tree of Life contributed the principle that the pathways have a shape and a direction of flow; the specific circuitry is Human Design's own.
What Is Not Carried Over
Human Design does not use the ten Sephiroth, the Hebrew letters assigned to the paths, or the theology of the Kabbalah. There is no attempt to map the Tree onto the BodyGraph sphere by sphere; the nine Centers come from the chakra system, not from the Sephiroth. What survives is structural: a body of energy understood as points joined by pathways, where definition lives in the connections rather than in the points themselves.
