The fourth line is the foundation of the second floor. Everything in the lower trigram was personal; from here on the hexagram turns outward, and the fourth line is where that turn begins. It sits in harmony with the first line, building on the security the Investigator created, but it builds with people where the first line built with knowledge.
The Role
Fourth lines belong to the upper trigram, the transpersonal half, and their process is social by nature. Their influence runs through the people they already know. Strangers are not their territory, and the fourth line that tries to work a room of strangers gets little back. Within its own network, though, it is deeply influential, and its brotherly or sisterly warmth is the thing that opens doors. That same openness makes it vulnerable to shock and surprise, which is why it holds its relationships so carefully.
In Your Profile
A conscious fourth line, the first number of a 4/6 or 4/1 Profile, knows it lives through its friendships and feels the loss of one as a real wound. An unconscious fourth line, the second number of a 1/4 or 2/4, works through the body: you find that opportunities arrive through people without your having planned it, and that you are drained by crowds you did not choose.
Living It Well
The fixed quality of the fourth line has one hard rule: do not let go of one branch until you are holding the next. A fourth line that leaves a job, a relationship or a home with nothing in place loses its footing and its influence together. The correct fourth line does not manufacture a network; the right people are already there, met through Strategy and Authority, and the investment pays back in genuine camaraderie. The not-self version burns out on people, or abdicates from a network that stopped returning the energy put in. Rest, retreat and the right friends are the whole prescription.
