In the house that Human Design uses to picture the hexagram, the second line is the ground-floor living room with the curtains open. The Hermit is inside, lights on, doing what comes naturally, and has no idea that people on the street can see in. That is the whole dynamic of this line: it does not go looking for the world, and the world comes looking for it.
The Role
Second lines belong to the lower trigram, so their process is personal and inward, but with a twist the first line does not have. Where the Investigator needs other people to help it study, the Hermit needs nobody. It is self-sufficient, and it cannot tell you how it does what it does because it never learned. It behaves democratically, not from conviction but because taking sides costs energy it would rather spend on its own play.
In Your Profile
A conscious second line, the first number of a 2/4 or 2/5 Profile, knows it would rather be left alone and often feels a low-grade guilt about it. An unconscious second line, the second number of a 5/2 or 6/2, shows as a body that withdraws before the mind has decided to, and as talents that other people name before you do. In both cases the same rule applies: the call has to come from outside, and only Strategy and Authority can tell you whether a particular call is yours.
Living It Well
The not-self Hermit says yes to the wrong calls, tries to live up to projections it cannot fulfil, and then isolates far beyond what is natural or healthy. The correct Hermit protects its solitude without apology and waits. Something correct will come by, and when it does the second line's gift, shared on its own terms, is often something nobody else could have offered at all.
