Line 1 - Disengagement
Exalted: (Mars) When an obstacle blocks you, the determination to step back for now. The withdrawal is deliberate and temporary, and refusing to engage is itself a way of provoking a response.
Detriment: (Mercury) Stepping back without knowing when to step forward again. The disengagement stretches on, indecision sets in, and the not-knowing becomes its own kind of provocation for everyone left waiting.
Line 2 - Confrontation
Exalted: (Moon) Going straight at the obstacle. The assault is instinctive and direct, and the provocation lands precisely because you did not go around anything, you went through it.
Detriment: (Jupiter) An instinct for self-preservation that tempts you to go around something that really needed to be met head on. The direct approach brings genuine discomfort, so you sidestep it.
Line 3 - Responsibility
Exalted: (Jupiter) Holding back from a fight when losing it would put other people at risk. Your first thought is for the bigger picture, and what provokes people is what you are willing to give up.
Detriment: (Earth) Assuming that others are more at risk if the obstacle goes unchallenged, and charging in on that basis. The sacrifice never gets made, and the results can be genuinely disastrous.
Line 4 - Temperance
Exalted: (Moon) Careful assessment before you move. You let feeling and instinct tell you when the timing is right, and because of that your provocation lands at exactly the moment it can work.
Detriment: (Sun) The belief that willpower alone can shift any obstacle, whatever the circumstances. You provoke without reading the room, and the circumstances that were always going to matter get ignored.
Line 5 - Single-Mindedness
Exalted: (Neptune) The rare knack for going around an obstacle rather than through it. Your imagination builds a new pattern that makes the blockage simply irrelevant, and the provocation lies in the sidestep.
Detriment: (Mars) Plain hardheadedness. It is a blunter instrument, yet sheer determination often succeeds anyway and gathers support along the way, and what provokes people is your refusal to budge.
Line 6 - The Troubleshooter
Exalted: (Moon) A natural gift for solving problems, and the practicality to guide and look after people while you do it. The provocation is in the helping, in taking on what others could not fix.
Detriment: (Mars) The same gift, run by ego. Problem solving becomes a way of building yourself up and getting what you want, and what provokes people is the drive to dominate underneath it.
