Gate 37

Gate of Friendship

Gate 37 sits in your Solar Plexus, your emotional centre, and it is the warmth that holds a family or community together. This is the gate of friendship: reaching out with touch, kindness, and loyalty to create the bonds that make a group feel like home. You sense the mood of the people around you and offer the emotional glue that keeps them connected. Underneath, it works through bargains and agreements, the unspoken "you do this, I do that" that keeps a tribe fair and functioning. There can be a fear around tradition, a nervousness about the roles a family expects you to take on. At your best you bring people together and honour what a group has built. When you trust your emotional wave and only make agreements you truly feel good about, your friendship becomes the heart of any circle you join.

Line 1 - The Mother/Father

Exalted: (Venus) Harmony is what keeps a family or a friendship whole, and you hold that harmony by instinct. Rooted in sensitivity, you become the warm, steadying figure others gather around, the one who keeps the bonds intact.

Detriment: This pole carries no fixing planet, so the harmonious quality of the line stands without a strong opposing pull. The one gentle caution is not to let the role of keeping the peace harden into duty drained of warmth.

Line 2 - Responsibility

Exalted: (Jupiter) You grasp that cooperation only works when each person carries their own weight. Taking clear responsibility for your part is what makes real friendship possible, and you offer it without being asked.

Detriment: (Mercury) The same understanding, aimed outward. Friendship becomes an occasion for pointing out what everybody else should be doing, and the reminders of other people's duties slowly crowd out the warmth.

Line 3 - Evenhandedness

Exalted: (Jupiter) A group only holds together if there is order, and you have a real feel for what is fair. You sense what behaviour a relationship can carry, and you respond to a breach in proportion.

Detriment: (Mars) Either endlessly testing where the line sits, or coming down hard when somebody else tests it. Either way, the sense of what a relationship can actually bear goes missing.

Line 4 - Leadership by Example

Exalted: (Moon) Anyone in a family can lead simply through how they behave. You bring your highest principles into ordinary, practical, everyday things, and that consistency is what quietly puts you in a leading role.

Detriment: (Saturn) A conservatism that only accepts leadership from the traditional head of the family, whether or not that person has earned it. Leadership coming from anywhere else goes unrecognised.

Line 5 - Love

Exalted: (Venus) Devotion to your people that is natural and unforced. There is a genuine harmony in you and sharing comes easily, so friendship becomes the place where that harmony finds its fullest expression.

Detriment: (Mars) Love that leans until it becomes dependency. Needing the other person too much strains the bond, and the affection can flip into its opposite when the need goes unmet.

Line 6 - Purpose

Exalted: (Venus) At its best, you truly appreciate what a family or group stands for, its inner values and meaning, and you extend friendship out of that genuine regard. Your warmth is rooted in respect for what the group has built together.

Detriment: (Mercury) The shadow craves variety and prefers loose, casual ties. Chasing new company, you can skim past the deeper worth of what a group has already created, trading its lasting bonds for the next passing connection.
