The sixth line is the roof of the house. It stands apart from the other five, and from up there it can look back over all of them and forward to the first line of the next hexagram. That vantage point is the gift, and it is also why sixth lines can seem aloof or disinterested. They are not uninterested. They are looking at the long view.
The Three Stages
The first stage, up to the first Saturn return at around twenty-eight to thirty, is lived through the third line's process of trial and error, but without the third line's natural resilience. The bumps hurt more, and by the late twenties many sixth lines are disillusioned and ready to withdraw. The second stage, roughly thirty to fifty, is the time on the roof: observing, healing, working out what is trustworthy, and quietly becoming someone others look to for wisdom. The third stage begins around the Kiron return at fifty, when the sixth line is nudged off the roof to live fully in the world as its authentic, optimistic self.
In Your Profile
A conscious sixth line, the first number of a 6/2 or 6/3 Profile, knows it is different and often feels that its life has a shape other people's do not. An unconscious sixth line, the second number of a 3/6 or 4/6, runs the three stages through the body, and you may only recognise them in hindsight. In every case the sixth line seeks a true partner and rarely finds one before the second stage is complete.
Living It Well
Hypocrisy is the one thing a sixth line cannot bear, in itself or in anyone else. Trust is its currency, and the awake Role Model is a living demonstration that a person can trust their own authority and live their own unique life. The danger comes in the third stage, when a sixth line that has not learned to decide as itself gets pushed off the roof with no way to steer. Strategy and Authority are the answer, as always, and a sixth line that has them models for everyone else what a mature nine-centered life can be.
